American National Insurance Company (ANICO) was founded back in 1905 and today has over 100 billion dollars in life insurance policies issued.

They are considered the most trustworthy financial institution by Forbes Magazine with A ratings from A.M. Best and Standard & Poor.

American National is best known for their ability to repay claims quickly and for their excellent customer service.

To display some of their financial ratings and customer satisfaction scores, here are some of American National’s rankings from the largest independent agencies that review life insurance companies.

American National Strengths and Weaknesses

Accelerated Underwriting

American National is well regarded for having some of the best-accelerated underwritings for life insurance on the market.

For policies with a face value of less than $1,000,000 they have what is called the express automated underwriting option.

If you are between ages 0 and 50 and you aren’t taking out more than $1,000,000 in coverage or if you are between ages 51 and 60 taking out up to $500,000 in coverage you can submit your electronic application.

If everything checks out within one day you can bypass the medical exam entirely. The underwriting offered by this company has very flexible Health criteria for applicants who are 61 or older.

Health Classifications

For people who are older, American National allows for a higher body mass index, higher blood pressure, and higher cholesterol ratios. ANICO also offers preferred plus ratings for smokers who smoke cigars or tobacco twice a month.

Those who suffer from sleep apnea, but control it well and those who suffer from depression or situational anxiety but control it well can still qualify for a preferred plus rating.

Diabetics who have a history of controlling the disease will qualify for standard plus but nothing higher.

American National Burial Insurance Plans

American National Signature Term

Their level term burial insurance policies are available in increments of 10 years, 15 years, 20 years, or 30 years. For this product, you don’t have to undergo a medical exam and they do have fairly competitive pricing. There is no graded death benefit for this and the policy coverage and premiums will remain the same.

This policy offers:

  • People ages 18-70
  • Up to $250,000 in burial insurance coverage
  • No medical exam required
  • Living benefits (almost similar to long-term care provisions in other policies)

American National Signature Term Xpress

This is also a level term burial insurance policy which has most of the same provisions as their Signature Term burial insurance policy. The only difference with this one is the underwriting.

The Xpress term offers very quick underwriting, which can usually help you to secure burial insurance coverage within 24 hours or less.

This policy offers:

  • People ages 0-65
  • Up to $250,000 in burial insurance coverage
  • No medical exam required
  • Living benefits (almost similar to long-term care provisions in other policies)
  • Very fast underwriting which can usually get coverage within 24 hours or less

American National Signature Term Xpress Plus

This burial insurance policy offered by American National is very similar to the other Signature burial insurance plans, with the main difference being that it offers more coverage, up to $1,000,000 with a medical exam that is sometimes required, depending on your health.

This policy offers:

  • People ages 0-65
  • Up to $1,000,000 in coverage
  • Medical exam can be required (depending on health)
  • Living benefits (almost similar to long-term care provisions in other policies)
  • Fast underwriting which can usually get coverage within 48-72 hours

ValueGuard Whole Life Insurance

This no exam whole life insurance policy serves as a great burial insurance option for someone who is looking to get higher face amount policies without the need of a medical examination. There are a few health-related questions that are asked in the application process. This is the best way to get burial insurance coverage in 24 hours or less, often times you can get coverage in 15 minutes or less.

This policy offers:

  • Coverage up to $150,000
  • No medical exam required
  • Health-related questions asked
  • Approval in 15 minutes or less

Legacy Whole Life Insurance

This is the guaranteed issue whole life insurance option which has no health questions asked and no medical exam. All of the other burial insurance policies offered by ANICO will ask some help questions even if they don’t have an exam that requires blood in urine samples.

This is American National’s guaranteed acceptance life insurance policy, which is considered to be true burial insurance.  If you don’t qualify for any other option this is the one remaining burial insurance product they have to offer.  As a result of the higher health risk, this is also their most expensive burial insurance policy in terms of cost per thousand dollars of coverage. You can get burial insurance coverage in 5 minutes and your premiums will remain fixed for the entire policy.

This policy offers:

  • Issue Ages: 50-80
  • Coverage Amounts: $3,000 – $25,000
  • Guaranteed Acceptance
  • Level premiums to age 121
  • Graded Death Benefit: Year 1-2: 110% of premiums paid in. Year 3+: 100% of death benefit.

Available American National Burial Insurance Policy Riders

Riders are additional benefits you can get with your coverage. They allow you to increase or limit the benefits you get with your policy. The most common options are below:

Rider Details
Guaranteed Insurability or Renewal Provision This benefit allows you to purchase extra coverage within the term of your policy without having to undergo additional medical exams. This is very beneficial if there has been a significant change in your circumstances such as a marriage or the birth of a child or your health has declined with age. In any of these situations you can change the amount of coverage you have up or down without having to take another medical exam.
In some situations this feature may end at a specific age.
Waiver of Premium This benefit means that your future premiums are waived, you don’t have to pay them, if you become permanently disabled or you lose your income as the results of an injury or illness. If you are the main Breadwinner and you become disabled it can be incredibly damaging to your family and in this case the benefit exempts you from having to pay the premium until you are able to work again.

This is a very valuable benefit especially if your premiums are very high and different insurance companies have varying definitions of the term totally disabled so you will want to look over the terms and conditions of the benefit you are taking.

Accelerated Death Benefit This benefit means that you get to use part of your total death benefits if you are diagnosed with a terminal illness and given one or two years left to live. On average insurance companies will advance you between 25% and 40% of your total death benefit which is then subtracted from whatever is remaining.

In some cases there is no premium charge for this benefit or there is a very small premium charge. Make sure that you verify what is covered before you take this out. This can also be called a terminal illness benefit but each company has a different definition of terminal illness and might have a different definition of the amount of time you were given left to live before you can take out part of your policy.

Child Term Benefit This allows you to take out extra coverage for your children so that you get a small death benefit in the event that they passed away under the age of 18. Once your child turns 18 they typically have the option of converting their policy into something more permanent without having to undergo additional medical exams.
Disability Rider This rider allows for you to be able to receive a portion of your death benefit on a monthly basis if you are disabled and unable to return to work.
